Shooting on location we had an idea for an escape challenge – tie up Ariel Anderssen and Lucy Lauren in the same tie, and see who could beat the 15 minute escape clock! The tie was deceptively simple – a hogtie, but with a rope up to the ceiling from the small of the back and chest harness. We even kindly left their hands free to slide, tying a rope cinched around wrists and also around the hogtie rope between the chest harness and the ankles. But with a twist – a false knot on the hands. This was designed so they could feel it and possibly undo it, but there was a second knot as well the other side of their hands. Steve and I thought that might be quite a time sink. We used the bamboo ropes which have some elasticity to them, which meant they could struggle and pull and make some clearance, but the rope would just spring back when they moved. But actually the key part to the challenge proved to be the fact that the bamboo ropes have knotted ends. There’s a reason knotted ends are banned at various convention escape challenges!
Ariel was first up, and we SHOULD have made sure Lucy was out of the room both for the tying and for Ariel’s escape attempt. Would that give her an unfair advantage. Did it let her escape? You’ll have to watch the video to find out.
