This is RE member-turned-bondage-producer Busby Wilder’s second film, which he’s kindly allowed to use as an update for you here on Restrained Elegance. Ariel and I went over to the USA to shoot with Busby for a few days- it was fun and unusual for me to get to work as cinematographer without the added headaches of producing and directing the shoot. I was a bit limited with kit selection, but in its way that was liberating too- I had a gimbal, a Sony A7RII, a 28mm lens, a 55 mm lens, a 24-70mm and 70-200mm. Lighting was mother nature plus an old-school redhead kit. Bondage gear was whatever Busby could beg, borrow and blag from friends in addition to his own collection.
It’s really fun for me like going back in time to work with “2001-era Hywel”. All that pent-up ambition and vision and drive to make something and the sudden ability to do something rather than nothing, and the realisation that you CAN get it all on film with minimal kit, as long as you’ve got the very basics covered. I need to remember that the voluminous reserves of the RE kit room are useful for when it is your full-time job and you need to do this stuff efficiently. But it inspired me to pare back on my own kit selection for the working holiday Ariel and I subsequently had in Fuerteventura- an even more pared-back lens selection and a ring-flash were all I took.
Anyway, sorry to digress and distract from Busby’s film- here’s his description of the delights in store for you!
